Ankle, hip, wrist and hand

Ligament injuries, instability, fractures and other problems of the smaller and load-bearing joints, treated with the same joint-preserving approach as the knee.

Ankle

Ankle sprains are the most common sports injury, and most heal with early movement and physiotherapy. When an ankle keeps giving way, or pain persists for months, the ligaments may need repair or the joint may have a cartilage injury or impingement that can be treated arthroscopically. Dr East also treats ankle fractures.

Hip

Pain in the groin or front of the hip in active adults is often caused by a labral tear or femoroacetabular impingement, where the ball and socket do not fit cleanly. Hip arthroscopy can reshape the bone and repair the labrum. Where the joint is worn beyond repair, hip replacement is discussed instead.

Wrist and hand

Falls onto an outstretched hand cause scaphoid and distal radius fractures, and ligament injuries that are easy to miss on a first X-ray. Dr East treats these fractures, wrist ligament injuries and TFCC tears, using arthroscopy where it helps.

Common questions

My ankle sprain is not getting better after two months. Is that normal?

A simple sprain should be much improved by six weeks. Ongoing pain or giving way suggests a ligament that has not healed or a cartilage injury, and is worth having assessed.

Do wrist fractures always need surgery?

No. Many are treated in a cast. Surgery is recommended when the bone is displaced, unstable, or involves the joint surface.
